Mixing patterns 101: How to effectively mix and match patterns in your home

Mixing patterns in the same room can lend a designer look to your space, but doing so can also create a chaotic appearance depending on the patterns you choose. Read on to learn how you can pull off the look and add a designer touch to your home.

The number of patterns you choose for your room can influence whether they work together or not. Odd numbers tend to look more appealing, so incorporate a minimum of three patterns in each space. While it’s not a hard and fast rule, the 60-30-10 strategy can make decorating easier. With the 60-30-10 approach, 60 percent of the patterns will be your favorite one out of the three, 30 percent your second favorite and use the third pattern (10 percent) as an accent.

Color is also important when mixing and matching patterns. An easy way to ensure that various patterns will create a cohesive look is to find patterns that feature the same colors. Polka dots and stripes can go together well when matching colors are involved.

If you want to mix colors as well as patterns, make sure the colors are at least the same intensity. Vibrant hues might not work well with soft pastels.

My last piece of advice? Use your instincts. You might have to play around with different patterns to create a look you feel good about, but your gut will tell you whether the mixed designs are stylish or just a mess.

Kitchen: The kitchen is a highly functional space where you probably clean, cook and socialize. More than likely, it’s not a room where you go to relax. Try adding small doses of yellow in the room, which can help make you feel happy and energized. Just be careful not to overdo it; too much yellow in one room can often feel overwhelming.

Dining room: Along with yellow, red makes a great color choice for dining rooms. Red is a very stimulating color and encourages healthy appetites along with conversations and excitement. This is good if you like to entertain guests frequently or use the dining room for nightly family meals.

Living room: The color you decorate your living room might depend on how you want to feel in that particular space. Lavender makes a good choice if you want the living room to feel calming and welcoming. If you want a more stimulating environment, however, red is the better choice.

Bedroom: The bedroom is a space where you should be able to relax, sleep and rejuvenate, which means loud colors like red and orange should not be used. Green is the perfect color for the bedroom, and it’s actually so versatile that it can be used in almost any room of the house. It is calming, refreshing and warm all at the same time.

Home office: If you often work from home, it’s important that you are able to be productive. The best color for home offices is blue, which has been said to help people concentrate and boost productivity.

This guide, of course, is flexible and does not have to be followed exactly. It can help you, make wiser choices, however, when it comes time to decorate your space so you can feel happier and more content in your home.

Give a room new life with an accent wall

Give a room new life with an accent wall

Is your space starting to look a little blah lately? Do you feel like the room just needs a change? Then you may want to consider painting an accent wall. Accent walls offer an easy and inexpensive way to liven up a dull room and make it pop. All you have to do is choose which wall you want to accent and the right color for your space.

Choosing an accent wall

The wall you decide to accent will largely be determined by the existing features in a room and how you plan to set up your space. Accent walls are meant to be dramatic, so it’s best not to paint a wall that is mostly covered with furniture or décor accessories. Otherwise the color will lose its impact and your room won’t pop as much as it could. That being said, you also don’t want your accent wall to be completely bare, which could cause the wall to overpower the rest of the room! When it comes to accent walls, balance is key, so choose a wall that maybe has a few hanging accessories, but avoid one that is mostly blocked with by a tall dresser or something similar.

Choosing the right color

When you’re painting all four walls in a room, your color choice is generally limited. A bright or dramatic color often overwhelms when it surrounds the entire room. That’s why it can be a lot of fun to do an accent wall in your space. Because you are painting only one wall an accent color and leaving the rest neutral, you can go as bold or bright as you’d like! If you really want to make a statement in your space, consider using wallpaper that features a fun pattern or design instead. Wallpaper is just as effective as paint, and can be easily replaced when you’re ready for a change.

If you’re sick of looking at white walls, then using paint or wallpaper to create an accent wall is a perfect solution. Don’t be afraid to go bold and make a statement with an eye-catching color like red or bright blue!

Decorate with spring accessories The great thing about home décor accessories is that they can easily be switched out and replaced. If your home is decorated in rich, warm colors that are often found in fall and winter settings, lighten it up with pastels instead. A new throw pillow or piece of artwork can change the tone of the room to become more seasonally appropriate.
